What are Psyllium Husks and what are their benefits?
Psyllium Husks come from the crushed seeds of
the Plantago Ovata Plant, a herb native to parts of the Asian
Mediterranean regions of Europe and North Africa. The Psyllium
seed husks have been used in herbal remedies for centuries.
Psyllium is very rich in soluble fibre.
Psyllium Husk is effective in lowering total
cholesterol and LDL (the bad cholesterol) levels. It is found
that 1% reduction in total and LDL Cholesterol reduces the
risk of heart disease by up to 2%
Researches from the Veterans Affairs Medical
Centre at the University of Kentucky (Lexington) and the
Procter & Gamble Company (Cincinnati, OH) evaluated the effectiveness
of Psyllium as a hypocholesterolemic and blood glucose
Modulator. Thirty-four men with Type 2 diabetes and nil to
moderate hypercholesterolemia were randomly assigned to
Psyllium or a cellulose placebo twice daily for 8 weeks. The
Psyllium group showed significant improvements in glucose and
lipid values compared to the placebo group. Serum total and
LDL-Cholesterol concentrations were 8.9% and 13.0% lower,
respectively, in the Psyllium group compared to the placebo
group. All day and postiunch postprandial glucose concentrations
were 11.0% and 19.2% lower in the Psyllium group (Anderson et
al. 1999) These impressive results occur as fibre finds bile
acids, cholesterol and fats, preventing their absorption.
Short-chain fatty acid products of fibre fermentation in the
colon, further inhibit cholesterol synthesis by the liver.
